A team of Duke University students and engineers in the world's largest country, the US, has created an electric monowheel, named EV300. It is the fastest electric monowheel of its kind, aiming to reach a top speed of over 72kmph. This electric monowheel also wants to reach a top speed of 98kmph, faster than a normal monowheel with a petrol engine. In fact, they have also received approval from the Guinness Book of World Records to attempt a record-breaking run, while it has been delayed due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

EV360 has been designed and developed almost completely in the Innovation Co-Lab of the University. They built it using a host of fabricated metal and 3D-printed components. This electric monocycle is powered by a 23 kW motor that generates a peak power output of 11 kW. Since it is designed to achieve speeds in excess of 112kmph, this monocycle is sufficient to help create a record-break run. It is connected to a 1.58 kWh lithium-polymer battery, which can offer a range of up to 14 km on the ride at a speed of about 32kmph. Its throttle setup is similar to that of an electric motorcycle and is routed through a braking disc.

Regarding this matter, the team says that this project is the right opportunity to apply the principles learned in classrooms. This monocycle concept looks cool, its drawbacks are more than its benefits. This attractive design does not allow efficient steering. Team head Anuj Thakur says that the steering angle is so small that it is possible to maintain only one direction, it is quite difficult to operate during turns.
