YEMEN: India on Friday welcomed the extension of a UN-brokered cease-fire between the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebels in the war-torn country for another two months, hoping that it would lead to more political talks to resolve the conflict.

We applaud the parties to the Yemeni crisis agreeing to extend the existing cease-fire for another two months," said Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs. "This development, as well as the reduction in bloodshed in Yemen during the ceasefire over the previous two months, as well as the first face-to-face meeting between the parties to the war under UN auspices," he said.

The warring parties in Yemen agreed to extend the ceasefire for another two months, according to the United Nations. "We hope that these developments will lead to more political conversation between the parties in order to end the crisis and restore peace, security, and stability across Yemen," added Bagchi.

The UN-brokered ceasefire, the first of its kind since 2016, was first declared on April 1 by Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary-special General's envoy (UNSG). For some years, Yemen has been wracked by large-scale bloodshed as a result of warfare between the warring parties.
