SEOUL: Yoon Suk-yeol will be sworn in as South Korea's new President on Tuesday,  signalling the start of a tough battle to avert an economic crisis, enlist the help of an opposition-controlled Parliament, and reign in an increasingly dangerous North Korea.

Yoon received a briefing from the Joint Chiefs of Staff at midnight in the subterranean bunker of the new presidential office complex in Yongsan, according to state media reports.

"President Yoon Suk-yeol conveyed his gratitude for our troops' tireless efforts in defending the land and safeguarding people's lives and property at all hours of the day and night," the National Security Office said. A bell-ringing ceremony was staged in downtown Seoul at the stroke of midnight to herald the new government.  At Bosingak Pavilion, twenty members of the public, including a naturalised citizen, a space scientist, and a North Korean defector, rang the bell 33 times.

The formal inauguration event will take place in the National Assembly Plaza at 11 a.m.  The inauguration celebration will draw over 40,000 people, including foreign dignitaries such as US Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan.
