SEOUL:  In the first poll on President Yoon Suk-approval yeol's rating since he took office on May 10, more than 52% of South Koreans gave him a positive rating, according to a survey released on Monday.

According to reports, 52.1 percent of 2,528 persons aged 18 and up in a nationwide Realmeter poll conducted from May 16-20 thought Yoon did a good job, while 40.6 percent said he did not.  Yoon had a high approval rating among supporters of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), conservative voters, and those in their 70s.

It was particularly low among followers of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), residents of southwestern Jeolla regions, and those in their 40s. Yoon's first meeting with US President Joe Biden and his attendance at an event commemorating the 1980 pro-democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju, according to Realmeter, helped boost his approval ratings.

The PPP had a 50.1 percent approval rating, which was higher than the DP's 38.6 percent. It's the first time the PPP's approval rating has topped 50% since it changed its name from the United Future Party in the third week of February 2020.

Yoon received 55.7 percent approval in a separate poll of 1,002 people conducted over the weekend by the Korea Society Opinion Institute (KSOI). The KSOI poll also found that more than 57% of respondents favour the government's intention to join the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a US-led new economic endeavour set to formally debut on Monday.
