ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a devastating neurodegenerative disease. There is no cure for it. ALS is the third most common neurodegenerative disease, after Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It is usually seen in people at the age of 60.

The cause of this disease is generally believed to be genetic and environmental factors. The results of the new study suggest that neurodegeneration associated with ALS can start slowly, and symptoms start appearing decades ago. The metal dysphomostasis process may play an important role in the early development of these diseases. Many metals like copper, zinc and iron are naturally found in the brain. If the normal homeostatic system of the body is not working properly, then these metals levels can be elevated and slowly accumulate in the brain.
