India's Yuki Bhambri has started the new year with a win in the Australian Open qualifiers. Bhambri, who is returning to grand slam level after the US Open 2018 due to a knee injury, defeated Portugal's 248th-ranked Joo Dominics 6-4, 6-2 in a 1-hour 8-minute bout. In the second round, 29-year-old Yuki will now face Thomas Machak of the Czech Republic. Yuki initially had difficulty overcoming his spontaneous mistakes but has since caught the rhythm.
Ramkumar and Ankita lost: According to media reports, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Ankita Raina have also suffered a setback in the first round of the qualifiers. Ramkumar is facing a 3-6, 5-7 defeat at the hands of world number 197 Gian Moroni of Italy. Ramkumar cannot make it to the main draw of the Grand Slam in 23 attempts.
He also clinched his first ATP doubles title as Allied International along with Rohan Bopanna last week. Among the women, the world number 203 Ankita Raina lost 1-6, 0-6 in just 50 minutes to 120th-ranked Lessia Surenko of Ukraine. It was Ankita's 29th birthday on Tuesday.
