PARIS: President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope on Friday that an upcoming summit hosted by Switzerland would accelerate efforts to achieve a just resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking before the French parliament, Zelensky underscored the significance of the peace summit as a potential framework to bring about a fair conclusion to the war. He acknowledged the efforts of international partners but emphasized that more actions were necessary for a sustainable peace.
"Eighty years after the D-Day landings, Europe is unfortunately no longer a continent of peace," Zelensky remarked. "The security of Europe hinges on the resolution of the situation in Ukraine. Without addressing the situation here, Russia will continue to act as a colonial empire seeking new territories."
U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking separately, pledged unwavering support for Ukraine under his leadership. He warned of dire consequences if the international community were to abandon Ukraine, stating that it would embolden Russia's aggression and threaten the entire continent.
"The lessons of D-Day are pertinent today," French President Emmanuel Macron stated at a ceremony attended by Zelensky at Omaha Beach. Macron announced France's commitment to transfer Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine and train Ukrainian pilots as part of an enhanced military cooperation.
Macron elaborated on the training plan, explaining that Ukrainian pilots would commence training in France by the summer, with pilots expected to be fully trained by the end of the year. He also indicated openness to Ukraine's request for military instructors to train forces within the country.
The statements from Zelensky, Biden, and Macron underscored the international community's commitment to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia and the desire to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
