Monday, BJP-led Maharashtra government made their promise to give a subsidised house to every retrenched mill worker, and said it would hold a third depict of low-cost houses for mill workers in August for 2,418 houses.

Housing Minister Prakash Mehta made the announcement of allotment of homes to 2,634 former workers in six mills across central and south Mumbai.

Mehta said, “There will be another lottery soon in August where the government will provide another 2,418 houses for mill workers, all in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, mostly around Panvel”. Officials said “these houses would be constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority as part of the erstwhile rental housing scheme, which was later scrapped and converted into an affordable housing one”.

Officials said all mill workers who had not been allotted houses in the first two rounds would be eligible to apply. The first lottery was held in 2012 when MHADA sold 6,925 low-cost houses of 225 square feet each, located across 19 defunct mill complexes of Mumbai.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who addressed the mill workers present at the draw at Rangsharda Auditorium in Bandra, said, “This state government is committed to helping all the mill workers and will work till the last mill worker gets his subsidised flat in the city.”
