Amit Masurkar, director of the ‘Newton’ as lead role Rajkummar Rao, has robustly refute reports that this film is a copy of the Iranian movie ‘Secret Ballot.’ Newton, which is now sweeping critics off their feet and has been regard as being India’s official entry in the foreign language film category for the 2018 Academy Awards. This film is based on the story of an election official in charge of a polling station deep in the Maoist-infested belt of Chhattisgarh.
“It would be best if people watch both films before make a decision or writing an article. We hadn’t even heard of Secret Ballot when we were wrting script. Newton is very rooted film. If it was a copy, do you think Berlin, Tribeca would have programmed it? The other film has also won international awards. Newton is not a copy of any other film, it isn’t even inspired from this,” Masurkar told
A report had said that the plots of ‘Newton’ and ‘Secret Ballot’ were a bit too parallel in terms of the story and the setting.
“The idea and the concept of both these films are parallel. Both narrate the story of a voting day in far-flung places,” the report said.
