Polio also known as "Poliomyelitis" is an irreversible paralysis or disability of the limbs that is a viral and infectious disease.

Symptoms

There are three types of symptoms

Abortive polio: This is a flu-like symptom such as a mild upper respiratory infection, diarrhea, fever or sore throat.

Non-paralytic polio: This is a more serious form that has symptoms like sensitivity to light and neck stiffness.

Paralytic polio: This is the most severe form of polio and it causes muscle paralysis or even death.

Causes

Polio spreads through contaminated food or water by feces of infected patients.

Treatment

Antibiotics can be given for the flu-like symptoms. There is no cure for the paralyzed limbs, however physiotherapy can help in some cases. Artificial limbs, crutches can be used for movement and sometimes even surgery is recommended.

Prevention

Make sure to get polio vaccines and drink safe water and food
