RAJKOT: Defending champions Mumbai reduced Tamil Nadu to 261 for six in their first innings on the first day of the Ranji Trophy semifinal at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here in Rajkot on Sunday.

In the second semifinal between Gujarat and Jharkhand, being played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, Nagpur, Priyank Kirti Panchal's unbeaten 144 runs helped Gujarat to score 283 runs for loss of three wickets.

Mumbai got wickets at crucial moments as opening batsman Abhinav Mukund (38), Kaushik Gandhi (50) and Baba Indrajit (64) were not able to convert their innings into a big one.

Vijay Shankar (41 not out) and Aswin Crist (9 not out) were playing at the end of the first day, which Tamil Nadu failed to make their own.

Medium pacers Shardul Thakur (2-64), Abhishek Nayar (2-56) and Balwinder Sandhu (1-46) made deep impact for Mumbai, while left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil also bagged a wicket towards the end.

In the match between Gujarat and Jharkhand, formers got decent start as opening pair of Samit Gohel (18) and Panchal scored 62 runs for first wicket. Then after Bhargav Merai (39), joined the fort and scored 65 for second wicket. After wicket of Merai, wicketkeeper-skipper Parthiv Patel (62) took the charge.

129-run partnership for third wicket between Panchal and Patel shifted momentum firmly in the favour of Gujarat. At close, Panchal was batting at 144 not out, while Manpreet Juneja, who came to bat after Patel's wicket batting on 12.
