NEW DELHI PM Narendra Modi is set to launch the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in the national capital on Sunday evening, June 19. On this occasion, the PM is scheduled to address the gathering. For the first time this year, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has launched the torch relay of the Chess Olympiad which is part of the Olympic tradition and which was never included in the Chess Olympiad so far. The PMO has spoken about the fact that this tradition of torch relay for chess Olympiads is now always going to start from India and pass through all the continents before reaching the host country with an aim to take India's relationship with chess to newer heights. FIDE President Arkdi Dvorkovic is all set to hand over the torch to the PM, which will be handed over to Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. The torch is scheduled to be taken to 75 cities in the country within a period of 40 days before reaching the venue Mahabalipuram. At every place, the chess grandmaster of UP is going to get this torch. The 44th Chess Olympiad is being held in Mahabalipuram between July 28 and August 10, 2022. The prestigious competition, which has been held since 1927, is being held for the first time in India and in Asia after 30 years. The participation of 189 countries, is going to be the largest ever participation in any chess Olympiad, the PMO said.
