Bijapur Encounter: Over 15 Naxalites killed, 5 Jawans martyred

Raipur: A day after the long encounter between police and Naxalites in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, it is feared that the number of martyred Jawans could rise further this morning. In the encounter, about 3 dozen Jawans were confirmed injured in the encounter till late last night besides the martyrdom of 5 Jawans and the killing of one Naxal. Police sources said this morning that the encounter site is 75 kilometers away and many Jawans are still waiting to return.

Let us say that the encounter started at about 2 o'clock in the day yesterday and lasted till late evening. The joint patrol of police in the dense jungle was attacked by Naxalites. The top official had confirmed that 5 Jawans were martyred till late last night in the hills-surrounded area. Out of the injured, 12 Jawans were shifted to Raipur by helicopter late last evening, and 24 Jawans were brought to Bijapur Hospital for treatment. Security forces claim that more than 15 Naxalites have piled up in the Bijapur encounter.

Police said the encounter took place in the jungles of the Tarrem area on the border of Bijapur and Sukma district. It is reported that a patrol team was sent here for a few days on the reported accumulation of Naxalites. Hundreds of Jawans were involved in the patrol. The names of the martyred and injured Jawans are yet to be disclosed.
