Assam: Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will be repealed in its entirety in Assam, citing better law and order and peace agreements with militant groups as reasons. Following the presentation of the President's Colour to the Assam Police, Shah stated in his address that most militant outfits have entered into peace agreements as a result of the efforts of the Centre and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and that the "day is not far when the entire State will be completely free from insurgency and violence." "The Armed Forces Special Powers Act has been repealed in 23 districts, with one district being partially repealed. He stated, "I am confident that it will be entirely removed from the entire State shortly." Both the federal and state governments are rehabilitating people who have surrendered and returned to society, according to the Home Minister. "The Assam Police has a magnificent history and has effectively dealt with insurgency, border concerns, arms, drugs, and livestock smuggling, rhino poaching, and societal issues such as witchcraft to emerge as one of the country's finest police forces," Shah added. At the 'Alankaran Parade' ceremony earlier in the day, Shah, who is on a two-day visit to the northeastern state, presented the President's Colour to the Assam Police in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. The flag has Assam's map, 36 stars signifying the state's districts, a one-horned rhino, and the Assam Police insignia with its motto.
