Ashaben Patel’s final rituals performed at a crematorium in Siddhpur

Gujarat: Ashaben Patel, BJP MLA from North Gujarat's Unjha who had quit the Congress to join the BJP in 2019, died on Sunday in a private hospital in Ahmedabad after battling for her life for three days due to dengue-related complications.

On Monday, Gujarat BJP MLA Asha Patel's final rituals were performed at a crematorium in Siddhpur, Mehsana district. When the 44-year-old first-time legislator's mortal remains were consigned to flames, former chief minister Vijay Rupani and MLA Anandji Thakor, among other BJP officials, were present.

After being admitted on Friday evening, the MLA from Unjha in Mehsana district died in the hospital where she was on ventilator support. Later that day, her mortal remains were brought from the Ahmedabad hospital to Unjha, where they were held until people could pay their respects.

In 2017, Asha Patel, a Congress candidate, defeated state BJP stalwart Narayan Patel, a five-time MLA, in the Assembly election from the Unjha constituency for the first time. In 2019, she resigned and joined the ruling BJP, winning the by-election for the seat that was created as a result of her transfer.
