Bangladesh ramps up booster shot campaign in the wake of Omicron scares

Dhaka: Following the detection of proven cases of the Omicron strain, Bangladesh plans to ramp up its campaign to deliver booster shots against Covid-19. Following reports of the quickly transmissible variant Omicron coming out in several parts of the world, including Bangladesh, the government issued an order to relevant departments at a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The regulation also complied with the latest recommendations of the country's health consultative committee, which suggested that senior persons and frontline workers receive a booster shot six months after the second dose.

The government's National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 recommended giving booster doses to frontline workers and individuals aged 60 and up who received the second vaccine at least six months ago. The group also suggested that any gatherings and meetings be kept to a minimum in order to combat the virus's new Omicron form. It said that unless absolutely required, all meetings should be done online. It also emphasised the importance of nationwide screening, quarantine, and isolation as part of numerous stepped-up steps to contain the epidemic.

Two female members of the Bangladesh Cricket Team were found to have the Omicron type on December 11, according to Health Minister Zahid Maleque.
