Seoul: Following recent cluster infections among prisoners, about 70,000 inmates and officials from all South Korean correctional facilities will be tested for Covid-19 beginning Tuesday. According to sources, the Ministry of Justice said the mass testing of 17,000 jail staff and 53,000 convicts will last three days.
The Ministry also stated that efforts to deliver booster doses to those who were fully vaccinated three months ago or earlier will be expedited. The decision was made after the virus was detected in 30 people, including 27 detainees, at a jail in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province.
Park Beom-kye, the Justice Minister, apologised for the latest major outbreak and promised to do all possible to prevent it from happening again. After diseases broke out in a Seoul prison centre last year, widespread testing was carried out.
