Dhaka: At least seven people have been reported killed in violence during elections at various places in Bangladesh. Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda had warned against electoral violence ahead of voting on Thursday saying security measures were being taken to deal with any untoward incident. In Bangladesh, at least nine people have been killed and hundreds injured this month in violent election-related incidents. According to the Dhaka-based human rights group Ion-o-Salish Center, 85 people have been killed and more than 6,000 injured in election violence since January. More than 1 crore 50 lakh voters were eligible to select representatives in 835 councils in the elections. There are a total of 4,571 councils for which elections are being held. These are known as union councils. They are responsible for community development and public welfare services at the local level. Voting is being done for these in different phases. In the first phase in June, elections were held for 204 councils, in which 148 candidates of the ruling party won and independent candidates won the rest.
