Bihar flood wreaks havoc, state govt seeks Rs 2700 crore from Centre

Patna: The state government has sought Rs 2700 crore from the central government to compensate for the damage caused by last month's floods in 13 districts of Bihar. In Bihar, flood life was disrupted in Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa, Supaul, Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria and Katihar districts. Roads and several government buildings have also been damaged as crops in the fields of these districts were damaged.

Principal Secretary in the Disaster Management Department Suffix Amrit said on Saturday that "the damage has been assessed on behalf of all departments after the initial survey. A memorandum has been submitted to the Central Government following a report from the departments demanding Rs 2700 crore." The memorandum also urged the Central Government to send an early team to assess the damage.

It is expected that the Central government team will soon visit the affected districts and take stock of the damage caused by the floods from their level. The Centre has asked the Centre to pay Rs 1555 crore to the people in the flood-affected areas. The government claims that the government has given six thousand rupees to every flood affected family.
