Bihar Govt Promotes, Transfers Dead Doctor As Civil Surgeon

A Bihar state health department's notice about promotion and transferred a doctor who died to COVID-19 to the post of a civil surgeon in Sheikpura district has become a matter of embarrassment for the state government.

Opposition leaders strongly criticised the Nitish Kumar government after the state health minister, Mangal Pandey, admitted the state health department's blunder in the Assembly. Dr Ramnarayan, who died in February 2021, was mentioned in the government's notification along with 16 other medical officers for transfer and promotion.

Health Minister Mangal Pandey admitted a lapse on part of the health department officials and said a section officer was served a show-cause notice. RJD-led opposition members raised the issue in both the Houses and brandished the copies of the transfer orders of medical officers, including the appointment of 12 civil surgeons on Monday.

Vijay Samrat, the Sheikhpura MLA, said the government promoted and transferred Dr Ram Narayan Ram, a medical officer at Bikramganj Sadar Hospital as district civil surgeon of Sheikhpura. Dr Ram had died of corona last month. He was supported by another MLA Lalit Kumar Yadav, who alleged "good governance" was not visible.
