Ahmedabad: The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party lashed out at the BJP over the Morbi bridge accident in October, but the BJP's bet cost both parties heavily. BJP candidate and Morbi hero Kantilal Amritiya, who saved lives by jumping into the river in the midst of a bridge accident, has won a bumper victory. He has been MLA 5 times before from BJP. Kantilal has got a total of 1,13,701 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Jayantilal Patel by 61,580 votes. In the bridge accident in October, Kantilal saved many people by jumping into the river without caring for his life. After this, in November, the BJP gave an opportunity to the sitting MLA and minister in the state government, Brajesh Merja, by denying him the ticket. As per the expectation of people's sympathy and support, Kantilal won by a very good margin. The BJP's vote share stood at 59.21 percent. In the year 2017, Kantilal Amritiya, who was contesting on behalf of the BJP, had to face defeat in front of Brajesh Merja of Congress. In the year 2020, Brajesh Merja left Congress and joined BJP. After this, Brajesh was the BJP's candidate in the by-election, but this time, after Kantilal emerged as a Hero in the Morbi bridge accident, the party gave him a chance in place of Brajesh Merja and the political calculations were perfect. Congress candidate Jayantilal Patel got 52,459 votes. Debutant Pankaj Ransariya of Aam Aadmi Party got a total of 17,544 votes. A total of 17 candidates were in the fray. AAP's candidate Pankaj Ransariya and 14 other candidates failed to save their deposits as well. Morbi went to polls in the first phase of the 2022 assembly elections on December 1. Compared to the 2017 assembly elections, this time the voting turnout proved to be 67.16 percent, 4 percent less.
