New Delhi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) based labor organization Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has demanded that the imperative to print a pictorial warning of health hazards on the bundle of beedis should be removed. The organization has demanded Union Labor Minister Santosh Gangwar to intervene in the matter for this. The BMS says that this decision to be implemented from September will impact the livelihood of 80 lakh workers employed in the beedi industry and one crore individuals who opt for tendu leaves. It is worth mentioning that at present, cigarettes, many tobacco products, etc., have pictured warning of the possibility of cancer. Now, this warning is also being made mandatory for Beedi. The Ministry of Health issued a notification on 13 April making it mandatory to publish a pictorial warning on 85% of the 25-beedi bundle. This rule is applicable from 1 September 2020. With the amendment of the rules, the definition of the package has also been changed in this notification. The wrapper, box, paper, or tin box or the carton is placed in the package. According to news agency PTI, BMS has also requested the Health Ministry to withdraw this decision and restore the order of 2009. The organization said on Monday that one of its delegations had met the Union Labor Minister and appealed to him to intervene in the matter. BMS has demanded the withdrawal of the government notification issued in this regard.
