Cabinet Approves Rs 79,156 Cr Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan for Tribal Upliftment

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan with an allocation of Rs 79,156 crore. This ambitious initiative is designed to uplift tribal communities across India.

The programme aims to provide comprehensive coverage to tribal families living in tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts, reaching approximately 63,000 villages and benefiting over 5 crore tribal individuals, as outlined in the Budget Speech for 2024-25. It will be implemented across 549 districts and 2,740 blocks in all 30 states and Union Territories.

The scheme includes 25 specific interventions, to be carried out by 17 different ministries. Each ministry will be responsible for executing its designated aspects of the programme within a set timeline, using funds allocated under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes (DAPST) over the next five years. Key goals include constructing pucca houses for eligible households, ensuring access to clean water through the Jal Jeevan Mission, and providing electricity via the RDSS.

Eligible Scheduled Tribe (ST) households will also receive Ayushman Bharat Cards (PMJAY) as part of the initiative. The government plans to improve infrastructure by providing all-weather road connectivity (PMGSY), enhancing mobile and internet access (Bharat Net), and upgrading health, nutrition, and education facilities through schemes like NHM, Samagra Shiksha, and Poshan.

The programme also focuses on promoting skill development, entrepreneurship, and self-employment, as well as ensuring access to quality education, healthy living, and dignified aging.

In addition, the government will map tribal villages included in the Janjatiya Unnat Gram mission on the PM Gati Shakti Portal to identify and address specific needs for each scheme.
