World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on April 26. The global campaign offers a unique annual opportunity to join with others around the planet to celebrate inventors and creators around the world and to explore how Intellectual Property contributes to a thriving music and arts scene and drives the technological innovation that helps shape our world. This day is celebrated to highlight the importance of the intellectual property. This year, World Intellectual Property Day is being celebrated under the following theme. This day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2000. It aims to rapidly increase the awareness of the impact on the daily life of copyright, patents, designs and trademarks. World Intellectual Property Day is an opportunity to recognize the role that Intellectual Property plays in inspiring innovation, encouraging creativity, and driving progress. Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. Intellectual property is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the Intellectual property system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish. April 26 was earmarked to be celebrated as World Intellectual Property Day as the "Convention to Establish the World Intellectual Property Organization" came into force on this day. World Intellectual Property Day was proposed by China. WIPO was established in 1967. It came into force in 1970. It is said to be one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations.
