World Book & Copyright Day is celebrated every year on April 23. This day coincides with the death anniversary of prominent English playwright William Shakespeare. The day is proudly celebrated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading and the love of books, publishing and copyright awareness.
This day also marks the death and birth anniversary of a number prominent people, including Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
As a part of this event, UNESCO elects the 'World Book Capital' for a period of 1 year with effect from 23 April every year. Tbilisi, Georgia has become the World Book Capital for 2021.
Every year, UNESCO and the international organisations representing the 3 key sectors of the book industry viz., , booksellers, publishers and libraries. select the World Book Capital for a one-year period, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations, effective April 23 each year.
On World Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO calls on its partners to share the message that books are a medium to address contemporary challenges, understand political and economic challenges & realities, and combat inequalities and misinformation.
History of World Book and Copyright Day: Originally on 23 April 1995, it was declared during the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris, and thereafter, on 23 April every year as World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day or Declared as International Book Day.
