According to the new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, China, dogs are now considered as pets, whereas earlier they were kept in the category of animal husbandry. The banning of the dog meat trade in China is beginning at a time when the Yulin Festival, a highly controversial dog meat festival, is about to be celebrated in the city of Yulin in the southern region of Guangxi. China has issued new guidelines on livestock and poultry farming by the Ministry of Agriculture, which includes 17 traditional livestock species. These include cattle, pigs, chickens, rabbits and camels, while reindeer, alpacas, pheasants, ostrich and foxes include 16 'special species'. According to this list, these organisms can be reared for food, wool or fur. Issuing a notice on its website, the Ministry of Agriculture stated that they took public opinion on the list of animals, with most people agreeing that dogs should not be listed as livestock. The dog is considered the companion of man, so he was excluded from this list.
