CM Nitish calls Jharkhand govt's decision wrong, said 'Bhojpuri has been the official language for many years'

Patna: Terming the Jharkhand government's recent decision to remove Bhojpuri and Magahi from the list of regional languages of Dhanbad and Bokaro districts as wrong, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Monday said his government will raise again its old demand for inclusion of Bhojpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution so that it can get the status of an official language.

He said that we have been demanding for many years to give the status of the official language to Bhojpuri. The state cabinet had sent a proposal to the Centre in 2017 in this regard. The CM's statement came on the occasion of International Mother Language Day on Monday. Talking to the media after the 'Sram' ceremony at the Janata Ki Darbar, Nitish said that Bhojpuri is not only from Bihar but is also a language spoken in UP and Jharkhand.

He said that Bhojpuri has a large area, it also has international importance and what has happened in Jharkhand right now is very wrong. Kumar also criticised the Jharkhand government for its recent decision to withdraw Bhojpuri and Magahi from the list of regional languages of Dhanbad and Bokaro districts. "We have been repeatedly saying that Bhojpuri is not just the language of Bihar. Bihar and Jharkhand were together before the partition (in 2000). He said that Bhojpuri and Magahi are the languages of both the states and are spoken in the border areas. In Chhattisgarh also, many people speak this language."
