Corona wreaks havoc in South Africa again, large population at risk of infection

Johannesburg: South Africa is reeling under corona virus infection. Gauteng province, the country's economic hub, which has 25 percent of the population, is the center of this transition. But the transition rate is also expected to increase in other major provinces. To ease pressure on the health system and control the rate of transmission, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced stringent lockdown and restrictions.

Shabbir Madhi is the Director and Co-Director of the South African Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Disease Analytics Research Unit and co-founder and co-director of the African Leadership Initiative for Vaccines Expertise at Witwatersand University. He held discussions with The Conversation Africa to shed some light on the situation in South Africa. Based on limited research into the scourge of the disease, it appears that the delta version of the virus is responsible for this fresh infection of the disease. According to the latest research, it is also much more infectious and possibly more viral than the previous variant.

The havoc of the latest wave of Covid in South Africa is different according to the province, and even within a particular province.
