New Delhi: A Delhi court has convicted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former Delhi Minister Somnath Bharti in connection with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) assault case. In addition to the Delhi-based Rouge Avenue Court, chief metropolitan magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey has acquitted 4 other accused in the case registered in 2016. Somnath Bharti was accused of beating the security personnel of AIIMS. The court sentenced Bharti to two years in jail. However, he was later given a bail on the ground that he wanted to appeal to the big court against the verdict. According to media reports, Somnath Bharti has been found guilty of beating, obstructing government work and damaging government property under IPC sections. The court acquitted four others, Jagat Saini, Dilip Jha, Rakesh Pandey and Sandeep Urf Sonu, who were accused in the case. The chief security officer of AIIMS had lodged a complaint with the Hauz special police station in 2016 alleging beating of security personnel at Somnath Bharti. Based on the complaint, the police had registered a case against Somnath Bharti for instigating riots, damaging government property, obstructing government work.
