Dalai Lama extends birthday greetings to PM Narendra Modi

DHARAMSALA: The Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader in Tibet, has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 72nd birthday expressing his warmest greetings and prayers for his continuous health.

"It's wonderful that India has overcome the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the fact that we have not seen a total end to it, India is now better equipped to handle such crisis in the future "In a letter, His Holiness wrote.

"As the visitor who has stayed in India the longest, I have personally witnessed its growth. The nation is currently a rising economic power as well as a pioneer in science and technology.

"The strong democratic basis of India is a model of tranquility and stability. One advantage that will help with future development and the realization of positive ambitions is having one of the youngest populations. I'm happy to say that India is ready to take up its proper position in the world.

"I have a lot of admiration for the way Mahatma Gandhi popularised the traditional practice of "ahimsa" around the globe." His Holiness said, "May I stress that for my part, I am strongly devoted to raising awareness of the potential of 'karuna' to assist us all lead a happy and meaningful life, besides attempting to promote this principle wherever possible. These principles are priceless relics of Indian tradition.

His Highness ended his letter with thanks.

I would like to use this occasion to once more convey my sincere gratitude to the government and people of India for their warm and welcoming hospitality toward us Tibetans ever since we were compelled to flee our country in 1959.
