Death Anniversary of Kaifi Azmi: Remembering his beautiful creations

Today, 10th May 2023 marks the  21st death anniversary of Kaifi Azmi, a renowned Indian poet, lyricist, and songwriter. He passed away on May 10, 2002, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary works and contributions to Indian cinema.

Kaifi Azmi was known for his socially conscious poetry, which often dealt with issues of poverty, inequality, and injustice. His lyrics and songs were popularized by some of the greatest Indian film musicians of his time, including Madan Mohan, Ravi, and Khayyam.

In addition to his artistic contributions, Kaifi Azmi was also a dedicated social activist and a prominent member of the Communist Party of India. He played an active role in promoting the rights of the working class and was a strong advocate for the empowerment of women.

His contributions to Indian literature and cinema have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the country. On his death anniversary, we remember his life and work and honor his legacy as a visionary artist and a committed social activist. He joined the Communist Party of India in 1943 and was given the job of editing the Urdu newspaper Mazdoor Mohalla in Mumbai. He also joined the Sajjad Zaheer-founded Progressive Writers' Movement in India. At this point, he made the decision to write for the good of society and to convey some important themes through his work.

Azmi met Shaukat, who came from an affluent family, during his time in Mumbai and fell in love with her. Shaukat was drawn to Azmi's comments since she shared a similar cultural background. In May 1947, they got married. Baba Azmi and Shabana Azmi, two children, were born to them as a blessing.

Kaifi Azmi made her debut in the Bollywood industry in 1951 and contributed to the script of the movie Bujdil. Later, he worked on many profound films like Yahudi ki Beti (1956), Parvin (1957), Miss Punjab Mail (1958), Id ka Chand (1958), Kohra (1964), Anupama (1966), Uski Kahani (1966), Saat Hindustani (1969), Parwana (1971), Bawarchi (1972), Pakeezah (1972), Hanste Zakhm (1973), Arth (1982) and Razia Sultan (1983) as a writer.
