Decision will be taken next week on postponement of UP elections

Lucknow: A decision on whether to postpone the proposed Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year will be taken after next week. This information was given by the Election Commission. A day after the Allahabad High Court requested the Election Commission to postpone the upcoming assembly elections and stay election rallies and meetings, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said a final decision in this regard will be taken next week.

In Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur, assembly elections are scheduled to be held early next year. But there is a growing demand to postpone these elections in view of the possibility of a rapid spread of more infectious variant omicrons of coronavirus. Media reports quoted Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra as saying, "Next week, we will go to Uttar Pradesh and review the situation there. Then they will take a proper decision.''

Earlier in the day, Union Minister Anurag Thakur, while talking to the press, had said that if the Election Commission implements the Model Code of Conduct, it should decide on the conduct of the state elections. Thakur had told the press that "when the Election Commission of India imposes a Model Code of Conduct, they have to decide when the elections will be held.''
