New Delhi: A court in the national capital on Friday (May 6) framed charges against former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain in connection with the 2020 anti-Hindu riots in the capital. The court has said that Tahir Hussain was an active participant in the riots and not a mute spectator. The court was hearing a petition filed by a person named Karan. Karan had a godown at Chand Bagh in Delhi's Khajuri Khas area, which was destroyed by a frenzied mob led by Tahir Hussain. During the hearing, Additional Sessions Judge Virendra Bhat said, "There were stones and bombs being thrown from the house of Tahir Hussain, Hussain was not a mute spectator, but actively participating in the riots and instigating other people who were unlawfully mobilised to teach a lesson to persons belonging to another community." The court further said that there was an agreement between Hussain and five others, namely Shoaib, Gulfam, Javed, Firoz and Anas, to set fire and vandalise properties belonging to the Hindu community. The former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor had made 'elaborate preparations to ensure that his plan becomes a reality. "Nowhere do the above circumstances indicate that it was a sudden act, but clearly reveal that the building e-17 of the accused Tahir Hussain was used to vandalise and set fire to properties of the Hindu community," the judge said. Detailed preparations were made to fulfil this objective. The court has framed charges against six persons under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 147 (rioting), 148 (armed rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 395 (dacoity) and 427, 435 and 436 of the IPC. Tahir Hussain has also been charged with sections 109 and 114 along with other sections of the IPC. About 53 people were killed and more than 250 injured in the anti-Hindu riots that broke out in Delhi in 2020. Ib officer Ankit Sharma was also stabbed to death 400 times in the riots, whose body was found near Tahir Hussain's house.
