Denied Ambulance, Bengal Woman Endures 10-Kilometre Ordeal, Succumbs to Death

Kolkata: In a heartbreaking incident in Bamangola's Maldanga village in Malda, West Bengal, a 25-year-old woman, Mamoni, was carried on shoulders for a 10-kilometre journey to a block hospital. Kartick Roy, accompanied by friends, faced multiple refusals from public carriers, including ambulances and toto rickshaws, due to poor road conditions. Mamoni, suffering from a fever since Wednesday, was ultimately declared dead upon reaching Modipukur block hospital.

The incident gained attention when locals captured the poignant moment of Mamoni being carried on a cot on social media. Kartick and his friends improvised due to the lack of transportation options willing to undertake the challenging journey.

Upon reaching the village, BDO Raju Kundu faced local outcry, and residents held the panchayat and administration responsible for the tragedy. Kundu mentioned that approximately Rs 99 lakh had been finalized for road repairs in the area. The tragic incident led to widespread protests, with hundreds of villagers blocking the state highway.

While expressing condolences, Malda Trinamool leaders pointed out that Bamangola falls under the Habibpur Vidhan Sabha and Maldaha Uttar LS constituency, both represented by BJP officials. State Minister Shashi Panja questioned why the roads had not been developed and raised concerns about the utilization of Pathashree-Rastashree funds allocated by the state government, suggesting possible misappropriation by BJP MLAs and MPs.

This incident reflects the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in the region, and it highlights the challenges faced by citizens in accessing essential services, especially during emergencies.
