NEW DELHI: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has announced Draupadi Murmu as its upcoming presidential candidate.If elected, Murmu will be India's first tribal president and the country's second female president. Murmu, who was born on June 20, 1958, was the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Murmu began his career as a teacher before entering Odisha politics. She is from the Mayurbhanj area of Odisha and comes from a tribal family. On a BJP ticket, she was elected MLA twice from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009). Throughout her political career, she has held a number of crucial roles within the party. From 2013 to 2015, Murmu served on the national executive of the saffron party's ST Morcha. She began her political career as a councillor in Rairangpur, Odisha, and rose through the ranks to become vice-chairperson in 1997. In the same year, she was elected as the BJP's ST Morcha's state vice-president. Murmu has been in charge of several ministries in Odisha, including transport and commerce. She has also worked in various of disciplines, including fisheries and animal husbandry. "Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has committed her life to serving society and strengthening the underprivileged, downtrodden, and marginalised," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet. She has extensive administrative experience as well as a successful governorship. I am confident that she would serve our country well as President."
