New Delhi: On the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people of Goa on Friday. "On the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, my best wishes to my sisters and brothers in Goa." "May this event strengthen our society's spirit of brotherhood and harmony," Prime Minister tweeted. The festival is held to commemorate St. Francis Xavier's death anniversary. For the Goans, it is one of the most important celebrations. Every year on December 3, the celebration is commemorated with zeal and dedication. Every year, Goans and others from all over the world pay respect to the Lord of Goa, "Goencho Saib." The Feast of St Francis Xavier is observed in Goa on December 3. During the end of November and the first week of January, people from all over the world flock to the Indian state to commemorate St Francis Xavier's death. In 1637, the Saint's mortal remains were placed in a silver casket at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, which was built by Goan silversmiths. St Francis was a Catholic missionary who travelled the world preaching about Jesus Christ. The Feast commemorates the day the Saint died on his journey to China, in honour of his dedication and service to the preaching and social work he accomplished in Europe and Asia. Although the Saint has been dead for over 400 years, his body has not totally deteriorated.
