Gender-based discrimination has raised in India with time and its awareness in society has simultaneously increased. Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh has launched a four-week campaign against gender-based discrimination. This campaign will witness the participation of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Amit Mehra, also the Project Director. District Rural Development Authority (DRDA) made it compulsory for all departmental officials to ensure their participation in awareness activities under the community-led national campaign against gender-based discrimination. He gave these instructions while presiding over the meeting organized in the DRDA auditorium regarding the campaign. This campaign will be having four constituents organized for four weeks- understanding and recognition of gender-based violence, raising voice, seeking support and showing solidarity against gender-based violence, and supporting a person struggling with gender-based violence. Gender discrimination is when unequal treatment is happening based on gender but not necessarily sexual discrimination, breaking the standard civil right code that takes many forms such as sexual harassment, gender identity, or gender expression. An annual national campaign under community leadership has been launched against gender-based discrimination named ‘Nai Chetna’ where the role of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers and self-help groups along with representatives of community institutions, and rural community Panchayati Raj institutions is important. It is a month-long campaign launched by the Ministry of Rural Development and works forward to sensitizing women, especially in rural areas. This campaign was launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women on 25th November 2022 and focuses on the institutional mechanisms provided to women to fight against gender-based violence. Amit Mehra directed the officers to inform about the helpline number 112 and cyber number 1930 issued for domestic violence complaints and assistance for the safety of women so that if any woman is suffering from domestic violence, they can contact these helpline numbers and raise their voice against the violence. He asked the officers to ensure the involvement of community institutions in the awareness activities to be carried out under the campaign to remove gender inequality. She also called upon women to understand and recognize gender-based violence, raise their voices against violence and seek support and show solidarity against violence. During this, the Additional District Magistrate also administered oaths to the officers and employees present in the meeting to end gender-based discrimination. Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr. Kuldeep Dhiman, General Manager Industries Chandra Bhushan, Assistant Director Fisheries Bhupendra Kumar, and other officers were present in the meeting.
