Finance Minister calls huge toxic waste 'threat' for India

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that large amounts of toxic waste flowing into India and being dumped here pose a serious threat, and that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) must act to arrest big fish involved in toxic waste smuggling.

The Finance Minister, speaking at the 64th DRI Foundation Day in Delhi, stated, Large amounts of toxic waste that enter the country and are dumped here pose a threat. I'm scared that toxic waste is being brought in, in enormous quantities and on a regular basis. I would like to see the DRI take greater action. Sitharaman praised the efforts of DRI agents on the ground in preventing smuggling.

"Every effort makes a difference. Take a look at the numbers of quantities you've found. It's not easy to catch 3000 kilogram of cocaine or heroin. I am delighted you were able to spot it on the west coast. But such is the bravado of those attempting to enter, and we must be aware of such an endeavour. It takes a lot of bravado to catch 4500 kilogrammes of marijuana. It's mind-boggling that dangerous goods are being shipped to India. It's incredible to find 900 kilogrammes of gold in one go. I honestly believe that DRI is something that India requires "she stated.
