Flood evacuations issued in New South Wales, Australia

Sydney: Local emergency services have advised residents in sections of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) to prepare to evacuate due to increasing water levels caused by heavy rain.

According to reports, the floods might evict more than 8,000 residents from Forbes, a small hamlet located roughly 380 kilometres west of Sydney on the banks of the Lachlan River, which runs across central NSW. Water levels might climb as high as 10.65 metres, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), which is slightly higher than the previous significant flood event in the area in 2016. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) issued a warning early Monday saying, "The situation is likely to evolve and it can develop quickly."

Residents should also prepare their cars with supplies and valuables to decrease evacuation times, according to the SES. Residents were advised to leave the area on Monday and stay with relatives or friends, or in temporary evacuation centres. To prepare for the floods, local residents have teamed up with emergency authorities and volunteers to erect sandbags. If the situation worsens, the NSW SES will send a text message to impacted people ordering them to evacuate.
