Pune's former corporator Vanraj Andekar was violently murdered by a group of 12 men on motorbikes in the Nana Peth area on Sunday night. The tragic event was captured on CCTV and has since circulated widely on social media. The disturbing footage shows the attackers arriving on six motorcycles around 9:30 PM. They were armed and fired multiple rounds at Andekar before assaulting him with sharp weapons. Andekar suffered severe injuries to his neck and head. According to Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma, "Vanraj Andekar was hit by five gunshots and was attacked with long-bladed sickles. He was declared dead upon arrival at KEM Hospital. Preliminary reports indicate he had multiple sharp weapon injuries. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses." The body has been transferred to Sassoon Hospital for a post-mortem examination. On Monday, police announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder. Additional Commissioner of Police Pravin Patil revealed that two suspects were apprehended by local police, while the third was arrested by the crime branch. "According to witnesses, Andekar was shot at, but the fatal injuries were caused by sharp weapons. An empty cartridge was found on the victim," Patil said. Police suspect that a relative of Andekar, believed to be in his late 30s, may have orchestrated the attack due to an ongoing dispute. Andekar’s family has filed an FIR naming nine individuals and five others as suspects in the case. Andekar, who was formerly associated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) before Pune's civic body was placed under state administration, had a history in local politics. NCP-SCP leader and former state home minister Anil Deshmukh criticized the state’s law and order situation, stating, “There are serious questions about the state's law and order, and the State Home Minister seems to be neglecting these issues.” The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding this violent crime.
