Kolkata: In a tragic incident in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, a man named Ramzan set himself and his in-laws on fire following a rejected marriage proposal involving his brother-in-law's wife. The incident, which occurred on Friday (August 30, 2024), resulted in the deaths of four people, including a child, and left two others with severe injuries.

The event unfolded in the Sagardighi police station area of Murshidabad. Ramzan, who had been married years earlier in the village of Bahalnagar, had lost his wife two years ago. Despite her death, he frequently visited his in-laws. During these visits, Ramzan developed feelings for his brother-in-law's wife and desired to marry her.

On Friday, Ramzan went to his in-laws' home to propose marriage. His proposal was met with shock and rejection by his brother-in-law's wife and other family members. Overcome with anger and frustration, Ramzan began to argue and abuse the family.

Ramzan had apparently planned to act violently if his proposal was rejected. He had brought petrol with him, which he used to set fire to the house after his proposal was turned down. The fire quickly engulfed the entire house. Despite efforts from neighbors to extinguish the blaze, the fire resulted in the deaths of Ramzan and three other people, including a minor child. Two others sustained severe burns and are currently hospitalized. The police are investigating the incident and are taking appropriate legal action.
