Gavaskar Favors Rishabh Pant for T20 World Cup 2024 Wicketkeeper Role

New Delhi: Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, advocates for Rishabh Pant as the preferred wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup in 2024, citing Pant's game-changing abilities. Despite Pant's absence from cricket due to a car accident in December 2022, Gavaskar believes Pant should be the first choice if fit. Pant, recovering from injuries and set to captain Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL season, is seen as a valuable asset in all formats.

Gavaskar acknowledges KL Rahul as a competent wicketkeeper but emphasizes Pant's inclusion if he is available. In the scenario where Pant is unavailable, Gavaskar sees Rahul's role as beneficial, offering flexibility as an opener or middle-order finisher. Regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's potential return to the T20I side for the Afghanistan series, Gavaskar suggests evaluating their IPL form, considering performances in the months leading up to the World Cup.

The former India captain emphasizes the significance of current form in March, April, and May, leading up to the World Cup in June. Gavaskar suggests that even if Sharma and Kohli have an average IPL, their contributions in crucial matches should be considered due to their experience. He proposes the unconventional idea of including Rohit and Virat in the squad, even if not part of the playing 15, to benefit from their vast experience and boost team confidence from the dugout.
