New Delhi: Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested transforming the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final into a three-match series. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, acknowledged India's losses in the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals against New Zealand and Australia but emphasized that these were close matches. He proposed that a three-match series format would provide teams with an opportunity to bounce back after losing the first match. Ashwin questioned whether there is a window available for such a change and suggested that the ICC should consider making a decision on this matter.

The Men in Blue, led by Virat Kohli in 2021 and Rohit Sharma in 2023, faced defeat in the WTC finals. In the rain-affected 2021 match against New Zealand, India lost due to weather conditions. In 2023, Australia outplayed India in the final. Ashwin highlighted the fine margins in these encounters and raised the question of whether the WTC final should be played as a series. He suggested leaving the decision to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Currently, India occupies the second position in the WTC points table, with Australia at the top after a 3-0 series win against Pakistan. Australia had a successful start to the new WTC cycle, drawing the Ashes series and defeating Pakistan at home. They will face India in a five-match Test series later in the year. In the recent two-match Test series against South Africa, India experienced a tie, losing the first match in Centurion and bouncing back with a victory in Cape Town.
