New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked the States and Union Territories to provide ration cards to migrant labourers registered on the e-Shram portal within 3 months so that they can avail benefits under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said that wide publicity should be given to giving ration cards to registered migrant labourers on the e-labour portal. The Supreme Court has given this order while hearing a petition filed by Anjali Bhardwaj, Harsh Mander, and Jagdeep Chhokkar. The petitioners had demanded from the court that rations be provided to the migrant labourers under the NFSA. During the hearing, the apex court said on April 17 that the central and state governments cannot refuse to give ration cards to migrant workers on the ground that the population ratio under the NFSA has not been properly balanced. The Supreme Court said that every citizen should benefit from the welfare schemes of the government. It is the duty of the government to ensure that facilities reach every person in the state. In fact, in February this year, after receiving information from the Centre and all state governments about the number of migrant workers under NFSA and other benefits under various government schemes, the apex court said that out of about 38 crore migrant workers, the online portal About 28 crore workers are registered on e-Shram.
