New Delhi: The rules of the jails in Delhi, the capital of the country, have been changed. For the first time, prisoners will be given a concession in punishment on the basis of good conduct during their time as undertrial prisoners. An official statement has also been issued in this regard. Under the current system, only the conduct of convicted prisoners is considered for pardon.
After conviction, the court sentences the criminal, while the undertrial prisoner is the one who is kept in judicial custody during the hearing of the case in court. An official has informed that now senior officials say that a new rule has been included under which concessions can be considered on the basis of the conduct of the undertrial prisoners. However, their sentence will be exempted only if they are proven guilty.
According to officials, this is a step in the direction of correctional administration in Delhi jails, which will strengthen their efforts towards reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners and re-integrate them into the mainstream of society.
