In a recent controversy in Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi made a statement saying that the name of Tamil Nadu should be referred to as ‘Thamizhagam’ to which actor and politician Kamal Hassan criticize him by saying that “we got the Tamil Nadu after many struggles, who is he to change this? Will he accept if we ask him to change his name to ‘Puvi’ instead of ‘Ravi’?”. Kamal Hassan said this during the event of the Bharat Jodo Yatra organized for his cadre.
RN Ravi has also said in Raj Bhavan “Unfortunately in Tamil Nadu, there has been regressive politics that we are Dravidians, and by the Constitution, we have been brought together. The entire effort has been created in half a century to reinforce this narrative that we are not part of the nation, but an integral part of the nation. And even a different kind of narrative has been created. Everything applicable for the whole of the country, Tamil Nadu will say no”.
He's been the governor of the state since 2021 and is an ex-IPS, 1976 batch officer, serving as the governor of Tamil Nadu appointed by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.
His speech during the session begins to address some controversy in the assembly and created a ruckus where a few MLAs of DMK started raising the slogan saying “don’t impose BJP, RSS ideology”, and “quit Tamil Nadu” against him. They also protest against the delay in passing the bills which include those regarding the ban on online gambling, clipping the governor’s power to appoint Vice Chancellors to state universities making it to 21 bills remaining to be passed by the Governor.
“It has become a habit, so many theses have been written, all false and poor fiction. This must be broken, truth must prevail. Tamil Nadu is the land that holds the soul of Bharat. It is the identity of Bharat. In fact, ‘Thamizhagam’ would be the more appropriate word to call it, a remark made by the governor RN Ravi.
T R Baalu has also stated the governor's remarks saying “he gives statements that are empirically wrong and potentially dangerous about Sanatana Dharma, Aryanism, Dravidianism, Thirukkural and colonialism, regardless of the occasion. He also makes derogatory statements about Dalits and even B R Ambedkar. However, it’s not difficult to understand his real motive”. T R Baalu is a DMK treasurer and a senior leader of the party.
Many other leaders have also come in against RN Ravi’s remarks saying that the name Tamil Nadu indicates our language, tradition, politics, and life itself. CN Annadurai made this name official in the state assembly and this land will remain in Tamil Nadu forever. CN Annadurai has fought a long battle for this and we will protect this.
RN Ravi has also skipped some points which were prepared by the State Government having references to secularism. MK Stalin that Governor’s actions were against the constitution.
