The Sports Ministry has said that it has not given any sport the status of 'National Sports' of the country. The ministry has said this in response to an RTI petition issued by the school teacher of Dhule district in northern Maharashtra. There is a general perception that hockey is the national sport of India. This petition was filed to know the answer to when hockey was declared the national sport of India. Mayuresh Aggarwal teaches at VK Patil International School located in Sindkheda Tehsil of Dhule District. He has been given the reply by the Ministry which was sent on 15 January 2020. He said that he did this by being inspired by the question of students who used to ask him when hockey was declared the national sport of the country. The ministry has said in response that the government has not declared any sport as the national sport of the country as the government's objective is to promote all popular sports events.
