Lucknow: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed on Wednesday claimed that he was being tortured at the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat. He also claimed that his family was ruined, but he was safe because of the media. The UP Police team left for Prayagraj by road on Tuesday after taking Atiq from the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. The team stopped for about 20 minutes at the Survaya police station in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district around 7.45 am, where media persons asked questions to Ateeq. Former UP MLA and Lok Sabha member Atiq (60) told reporters, "My family has been ruined. I am safe because of you." Later, on reaching Jhansi, he said that his family had been reduced to ashes. He also sought mercy for the family. His reference was to the statement of UP CM Yogi Adityanath, in which he had said that he would mix the mafia in the soil. He said, "I did not call anyone from there (inside the jail) because jammers have been installed there. I did not hatch any conspiracy and have been behind bars for the last six years." When asked by the media whether the government has said that he will be destroyed, Atiq said, "They have already destroyed me. I am being harassed in Sabarmati Jail as well." On Wednesday, the police convoy taking Ahmed to Prayagraj entered the UP border from Jhansi around 8.45 a.m. It may be mentioned that before this, Ahmed was taken to Prayagraj through the same route on March 26, and at that time also the police convoy had stopped in Shivpuri district. At that time, when media persons had asked Atiq whether he was afraid of his life, he had said, "Why fear?"
