CHANDAULI: Police in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, unearthed an illegal arms manufacturing unit, while Azamgarh police arrested six arms smugglers. On Sunday, police recovered a large quantity of illegal firearms and also live cartridges. In Chandauli, the Mughalsarai police raided a hut near Kundakhurd village on the banks of the Ganga and unearthed an illegal arms manufacturing unit. According to Circle Officer (CO) Sadar Anil Rai, police have arrested Sanjay Sharma of the Marufpur Balua area. Four country-made revolvers, several partially-made revolvers, equipment and tools for manufacturing arms and other articles were recovered during the search of the hut. Sharma admitted during interrogation that he had been involved in illegal arms manufacturing for a long period of time. Since police checkpoints have been stepped up in anticipation of the Assembly elections, he began relocating to run his arms unit. He was currently operating it out of a hut in a remote location near the Ganga. Rai stated that Sharma was preparing arms in anticipation of supplying them to various parts of this region during the upcoming elections.
