How much sleep does a child need?

The amount of sleep a child needs depends on the individual and certain factors. Including the age of the child.

1-4 weeks old- 15-16 hours a day.

1-4 months old- 14-15 hours a day.

4-12 months old- 14-15 hours a day.

1-3 years old- 12-14 hours a day.

3-6 years- 10-12 hours a day.

7-12 years old- 10-11 hours a day.

12-18 years old- 8-9 hours a day.

Which sleep problems should you watch out for?

Nightmares

Nightmares usually occur later in the night and cause strong feelings of terror, fear, distress or anxiety. Nightmares in children can be caused by a frightening experience, such as watching a scary film, or by something that’s worrying them.

Sleep terrors/sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is a behavior disorder that originates during sleep and results in walking or performing other complex behaviors while asleep. It is much more common in children than adults and is more likely to occur if a person is sleep deprived.

Tips for better quality sleep

Sleep is an important aspect of your child’s health. Have a set bed time and wake up time, Make your child’s room a relaxing and comforting place, don’t do anything energizing close to bed, teach your child how to self-soothe and fall asleep independently, make sure your child is getting enough sleep, avoid giving your child caffeine close to bedtime.
